How to Get and Use Gifts in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot features a deep character progression system. You don't start as an all-powerful warrior, and instead, you will be leveling up your characters using various RPG mechanics throughout the game.

Gifts in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot can be used to increased the level of Soul Emblems. Soul Emblems are crucial and are granted to you when you complete story missions or side quests. You can place Soul Emblems on Community Boards, giving you various bonuses depending on which Soul Emblems you use. This will increase your character's abilities and powers, so leveling up Soul Emblems is an essential part of the character progression in the game.

To get Gifts, you need to finish chapters of the game. You can also gain them upon achieving victory in some of the battles in the main story. Side quests will also grant them, so if you want to get Gifts quickly, run through some side missions. You will find side quests on the map, marked with a blue exclamation point. You can find lots of side quests as you explore the map, so keep your eyes peeled for new ones as you progress through the story.

To level up your Soul Emblems using gifts, you need to go into the main menu. From there, navigate to the Community tab, and then select Soul Emblems. Find the Soul Emblem you wish to level up and then open up the Details tab. Now, you will be able to give the Soul Emblem gits, increase its level.

Pay close attention to what bonus each Soul Emblem offers you before you choose to level it up, and make sure it is giving you a benefit that will compliment your playstyle.

Every PlayStation 5 Game We Know About So Far

PS5
John HansenThu, 01/16/2020 - 08:38

2020 is the start of a new decade that also brings with it a new console generation. Sony has given slight teases to how the PlayStation 5 will run and what kind of features the new controller will have, but we have yet to see what the console itself looks like and how much it will cost. That being said, we do know quite a few games that will be coming to the PlayStation 5. Here are all the PS5 games we know about so far.

Godfall

Godfall is a game being developed by Gearbox, creators of Borderlands, for the PS5 and Epic Games Store this holiday season. Little is known about the game so far beyond the trailer above that was shown at the Game Awards. The official Godfall Twitter account describes the game as a "next-gen looter-slasher from Counterplay Games & @Gearboxofficial. Set in a bright fantasy universe, utilize melee combat for hunting for loot, donning legendary armor sets, and pursuing vicious enemies."

A New Remaster From Bluepoint Games

Bluepoint Games, the makers of well-received remasters Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and Shadow of the Colossus confirmed in the PS5 detail unveiling interview with Wired that they are working on a new PS5 remaster and that it was "big." Marco Thrush, the president of Bluepoint Games, said, "We're working on a big one right now. I'll let you figure out the rest."

Starfield

Very little is known about Starfield; besides that, it will be the next big release from Todd Howard and the team at Bethesda. It is also the first new project Bethesda Game Studios will release in over two decades. The teaser trailer shows a structure in orbit of a planet. Expect to see more at E3 2020.

Elder Scrolls VI

If little is known about Starfield, then the newest Elder Scrolls has a minuscule amount known about it. All the teaser trailer reveals is a mountainous area with a castle in it. The highly anticipated follow up to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is known to be releasing after Starfield,so do not expect it to release anytime soon. Potentially we could see more at E3 2020, but I would not count on it.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion was initially slated to release on Mar. 20, 2020, for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, following a disappointing outing from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Ubisoft delayed it and two other titles. While we do not know when the new Watch Dogs will release now, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed all three delayed titles will release on both current and next-generation consoles.

Watch Dogs: Legion takes place in London and will allow you to recruit and play as tons of NPCs in the world. The trailer from E3 2019 shows a near-future period with drones and just a few of the possible characters you can take control.

Rainbow Six: Quarantine

Rainbow Six: Quarantine is the second Ubisoft game to be delayed in 2020. There was no release date for the game initially, but a trailer was released, hinting at the zombie-like creatures you will be fighting against in the cooperative shooter. It will release on current and next-generation consoles.

Gods and Monsters

Gods and Monsters is the third Ubisoft game delayed in 2020. It was initially supposed to release in February 2020. The game is made by the same studio that made Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and seems to feature fights against Greek mythological creatures. The E3 2019 trailer shows off the more cartoony graphics the game seems to be going. Gods and Monsters will release for current and next-generation consoles.

Two Other Unannounced Ubisoft Games

When announcing the delays of the three previous games and the releases on next-generation consoles, Yves Guillemot also revealed two unannounced Ubisoft games that would release on both current and future hardware. While he did not reveal what these were, a new Assassins Creed game centered on Vikings has been rumored for a long time, and fans have been clamoring for a new Splinter Cell game. There is no evidence pointing to either of these being those two games, though.

Battlefield 6

The next Battlefield game will not release until late 2021 at the earliest. During a financial call in October 2019, EA announced that DICE’s next release would not happen until the 2022 fiscal year, which runs from April 1st, 2021, to March 31st, 2022. Nothing else is known besides them saying live service offerings will drive the game.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Gollum

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a narrative-based game that will follow Gollum (or Smeagol) between him finding the one ring of power and losing it to Bilbo during the events of "The Hobbit." The developers of the game, Daedalic, say the games will be based off of the books and not the Peter Jackson movies so you can expect things to be different than your used to if you're a fan of the movies. This is also only the first game they will be making in a series. As of now, it is slated to release in 2021 for PC and "all relevant consoles at that time," which would imply a next-generation release.

Byleth is the final DLC fighter coming to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters PassCale MichaelThu, 01/16/2020 - 09:15

As part of the Fighters Pass DLC, Byleth will join the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside a new stage and even more music tracks from the Fire Emblem series.

Fans have speculated for months about who the eventual fifth fighter could be. Most people were expecting another third-party character; we now have confirmation that Nintendo is bringing one of their own newer heroes to the battle. With the addition of this Three Houses representative, the speculation for the next wave of DLC will only become even more hectic.

You will also be able to play as both Male and Female Byleth, utilizing multiple different weapons from the game the protagonist comes from. This will help the character differentiate themselves from the other Fire Emblem characters and weapon wielders that are already present on the main roster.

Byleth will be available on Jan. 28, which is well before the end of February cut off date that was initially given for the Fighters Pass to wrap up production. Challenger Pack 5 is the final piece of the Fighters Pass DLC, which means whatever character comes next will either be a single release or start the next expansion for Ultimate.

The Fighters Pass has kept Smash Bros. at the front of Nintendo’s plans and has been a successful way to remarket the game with each character release. So a second season of the Fighters Pass makes a lot of sense, especially with how hype it gets fans.

Players can purchase the full Fighters Pass DLC bundle and get all five Challenger Packs as they become available for $24.99, or they can buy the Byleth DLC individually for $5.99 from the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Mortal Kombat 11 Unleashes Joker Gameplay, Available Later This Month For Early Access UsersRobert WorkmanThu, 01/16/2020 - 09:19

As previously promised through Ed Boon’s Twitter teases, NetherRealm Studios finally revealed gameplay footage for its latest Mortal Kombat 11 entrant — the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker.

DC’s villainous character has been known about for some time, but today, we finally get an idea of what he can do in the game. You can watch the new footage below before he arrives on Jan. 28 for Early Access users, and Feb. 4 for everyone else.

In addition, there’s also a three pack of DC Elseworlds-themed skins coming on Jan. 28 as well, featuring Killer Croc, Batwoman and a vicious version of the Scarecrow. You can see Baraka’s Croc in action in the trailer. Well, getting beat up by Joker. Oh, and did we mention Geras was getting an outstanding "Time Lord of Apokolips" costume?

Anyway, back to Joker. He uses a number of creative items, including his traditional cane, a pair of extending boxing gloves, and even a fake Batman doll that can shoot bullets. Combine these with some stylish combos, mini-rockets and an exploding Jack-In-the-Box, and there’s a lot that you can do with him.

His style is definitely a slight change of pace from what his previous version from Injustice 2 could do, as his attacks look to be much more devastating. In fact, his X-Ray is worth a look alone, as he uses both a knife and his cane to pound his opponent into, as Harley Quinn might put it, “puddin’.”

Then there’s his fatality. We won’t spoil it here, but it has a fun call back to earlier Mortal Kombat games — but with a more of an explosive bang. Stick around to the end to see something from Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe as well.

Joker will be available for separate purchase on Feb. 4. Can’t wait? Grab the Kombat Pack and get access to him a week earlier, along with other characters like the Terminator T-800 and classic favorites like Shang Tsung and Nightwolf. Keep in mind that Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is set to arrive as well, sometime during the spring.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Does Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Have Romance Options?

Does Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Have Romance Options?

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will let you do a lot of things. You'll be playing as Goku and friends. You can engage in battles, explore the world, level your character, and do activities like training, fishing, and eating. As a game, it is a bit of a departure from what other DBZ games have done, so you might be wondering if it will have romantic storylines.

It does not, and there are no romance options in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. There are many relationships in the game that series fans will be aware of, but you will not be able to forge new ones or engage in risky romantic dialogue options with other characters.

It's not a huge deal when you consider that putting fists in faces has always been the core attraction of the series, and there will be plenty of that on offer in the game. You'll be playing through some of the most significant moments in the history of Dragon Ball Z, and seeing new events that will help to shed light on some of the series' biggest mysteries.

You will also be trying to level up all your characters so that you can take on some of the powerful enemies that you will be fighting, so you won't even have time to romance other characters. A hero's life is never dull, but perhaps it can be a little lonely.

If you have other questions about the game, we have plenty of helpful guides. From how character progression works, how to use gifts, and the trophies and achievements you can earn.

Metro Redux Confirmed For Nintendo Switch, Arrives Next MonthRobert WorkmanThu, 01/16/2020 - 09:35

After months of being rumored, Deep Silver finally confirmed that Artyom is making his way to Nintendo Switch. This morning, the publisher announced Metro Redux, featuring remastered versions of the classic Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light games, will come to Nintendo Switch next month.

However, unlike other Switch ports, this one is being handled directly by the game’s original developer, 4A Games. Deep Silver also confirmed that these will be the complete games, including the downloadable content.

“Immerse yourself in the post-apocalyptic world of the Moscow metro as you, Artyom, fight to save your besieged home station from all that would threaten it,” the publisher noted in its press release. “Experience the events that came before Metro Exodus and experience the epic story on Switch for the first time.”

Along with a digital release, Metro Redux will also get a physical version with all content included on the cartridge — good news for those of you that are saving space.

As a bonus for going physical, fans who pre-order will also get a special The Ranger Cache pack from select retailers. This includes the following:

  • Metro Redux pin badge set
  • Game case sleeve
  • Double sided alternate artwork inlay
  • Four double sided art cards
  • A2 double sided poster

Here’s a quick description, for those that aren’t familiar with the Metro 2033 novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky:

“In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised underground. Having never ventured beyond the city limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat.

But will they even listen? Rather than stand united, the factions of the Metro are locked in a struggle for the ultimate power, a doomsday device from the military vaults of D6. A civil war is stirring that could wipe humanity from the face of the earth forever.”

Check out the debut trailer and prepare to immerse yourself back in Artyom’s world when Metro Redux arrives on Feb. 28.

Fire Emblem Three Houses Wave 4 DLC Hints at Fourth HouseRebekah McPhersonThu, 01/16/2020 - 09:50

Reactions for Byleth being announced as the final fighter in the first Fighter Pack DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have ranged from excitement to rage, but Fire Emblem fans have more to look forward to with an image surfacing with a hint at the fourth wave of DLC.

Nintendo has officially released a video regarding a new story path, titled Cindering Shadows. The video features Hilda's voice talking about what goes on under Garreg Mach. Their name is rumored to be called Abyss.

The Ashen Wolves are confirmed to be the secret fourth house, featuring new characters Yuri, the Ashen Wolves house leader, Hapi, Constance, and Balthus. Some of the new characters are showcased in unique classes that are not present in the game, such as Constance being a Dark Flier capable of wielding magic unlike a Falcon or Pegasus Knight. There will also be new maps and other features in the DLC.

The additional side story Cindered Shadows will be released on Feb. 13th, 2020.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Jan. 16 Reveal: Here’s What You Might Have MissedRobert WorkmanThu, 01/16/2020 - 09:59

In case you missed the news earlier today (or you were still asleep, it did air rather early), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the fifth and final character in the current season pass for the hit game— Fire Emblem veteran Byleth. Further details on the character are available here. That said, today’s reveal brought additional information worth catching up on.

First off, it was confirmed that a second Fighters Pass is on the way, featuring six characters instead of the usual five. Though its contents haven’t been revealed just yet, the pass will be available for pre-purchase starting on Jan. 28 in the eShop, going for $29.99. Those that take advantage will get a free Ancient Soldier Gear costume from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for their Mii Swordfighter character, which should be available in-game on the same day.

Alongside Byleth, the game will get a new stage, the Garreg Mach Monastery. In it, fans will see a few familiar faces from the Fire Emblem universe, including Edelgard from the Black Eagles, Claude from the Golden Deer and Dimitri from the Blue Lions.

With the stage and character (well, characters since both the male and female versions are included), there will also be a new Spirit Board, featuring a variety of favorites from the Fire Emblem series. A new classic mode route, “A Heroic Legacy,” will also be available, going over bits and pieces from its history.

Sakurai also discussed the two new Amiibo set to arrive in stores tomorrow — Dark Samus and Richter Belmont of Castlevania fame. Those interested still have a little bit of time to get their pre-orders in, depending on the retailer.

Finally, a slew of new Mii Fighter costumes will debut on Jan. 28. These include costumes inspired by Altair from Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft’s Rabbids, Mega Man (including a neat Battle Network callback) and Cuphead. You can view that trailer below to see which one stands out best for you. There will also be a new music track from the Cuphead game included, taken from the “Floral Frenzy” boss battle.

If you missed any part of the presentation, it’s available in full below, including in-depth gameplay footage of Byleth in action, along with all the other goodies.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.

How to Escape From Battles in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

How to Escape From Battles in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Combat is a big part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise, and it serves a huge function in leveling up and becoming stronger in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. However, you might run into something far stronger than yourself in the middle of nowhere. When that happens and your opponent has you outmatched, you may need to run away to return to it at another time.

Escaping combat is exceptionally straightforward. You need to disengage from your opponent and start flying away from them. It can be in any direction you choose, but it has to be far away. Make sure to remove your lock-on camera with them by clicking the Right Stick on your controller before you do it, or you remain close by and continue flying around them.

When you're far enough away from your opponent, you can fully disengage and continue the activities as if you were never in combat. You can only do this during certain times, though. For example, you wouldn't be able to disengage and escape a boss battle during a story mission. You can only do this in wild encounters, and these encounters can happen anywhere in the overworld.

While you might have trouble against a story mission, you can't leave those. You have to keep fighting until you win or lose. Luckily, you can avoid any random you encounter you when you're at a low level until you come back to that area stronger.

Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will bring six more DLC characters to Super Smash Bros. UltimateCale MichaelThu, 01/16/2020 - 10:12

As many speculated, series producer Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that the additional DLC coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is going to be part of Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

Sakurai announced that there were more DLC Fighters being developed for the game when Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard was added to the game in November, but it was unknown if it would be as individual characters or a second collection.

After Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses got their time to shine as the fifth and final character being added to the original Fighters Pass, Vol. 2 was officially confirmed, with six new fighters coming in the next wave. That will make it slightly bigger than the first expansion, bringing the total DLC fighter count up to 11 once it wraps up.

Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will be available for pre-order on Jan. 28, the same day Byleth is added to the game. There is no official price point for the expansion yet, but it will likely be around $29.99 since the original Fighters Pass was five characters for $24.99.

As a bonus for purchasing the new Fighter Pass, players will receive a special Mii Swordfighter costume. The Ancient Soldier outfit is based on the Guardian armor from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and will be unavailable for individual purchase, which means it is exclusive to the expansion.

Every fighter for the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will be released before Dec. 21, 2021, so based on how close to the deadline Byleth was revealed for the original, it can be assumed we will be seeing DLC announcements less frequently this time around. That roughly translates to three fighters each year if you don’t count Byleth towards the total, which is still fantastic timing for fighting game content since each character adds so much to the game.

Everything We Know So Far About Fire Emblem Three Houses' Fourth House Ashen Wolves

Fire Emblem: Three Houses has dropped the bomb with releasing a trailer that reveals the fourth house, the Ashen Wolves. Dubbed as the secret shadow of Garreg Mach, the new house includes four new characters who will take part in the additional side story that will be released on Feb. 13th. While we do not know much about the new characters right now, here is what we know so far about the four new characters shown in the Cindered Shadows trailer.

Three Houses Yuri

Yuri

Yuri is the leader of the Ashen Wolves house. He explains in his dialogue that the students from the house are eager, but with no teacher to guide them. While he would appreciate if his fellow students were to be under the guidance of a teacher, he is reluctant to get Byleth and the other Garreg Mach students in the conflict they are dealing with.

Yuri's class is rumored to be a Trickster when it comes to his class' outfit. He is shown to switch places with Byleth in one of the new maps, making him capable of being able to use Faith magic and swords.

Hapi

Hapi

There is not much to say about Hapi at a first glance, but she is shown to be somewhat pessimistic, especially when she says that no matter what she and the others do, they will die regardless of what happens. In combat, she seems to be a Valkryie as she is a cavalry unit and is using Reason magic.

Three Houses Constance

Constance

Constance in the trailer gives exposition to the Ashen Wolves' place, explaining what Abyss is once Byleth makes their way to the secret hideout. She is also a new class in the game called Dark Flier, who is capable of wielding Reason magic and lances as seen from previous Fire Emblem games. From what we have seen, she is a confident battler.

Three Houses Balthus

Balthus

Balthus is the tough guy who looks to be of the War Monk class, who dubs himself as the Almighty King of Grappling. He has a Hero's Relic called the Varja-Mushti, which also has a combat art called Pneuma Gale. It is currently unknown what crest he has that makes him capable of wielding the legendary weapon. Because of him being able to use the Varja-Mushti, he might have a hugely significant role in the side story.

All four characters will also have their own support conversations, one of them being able to S-support with both male and female Byleth. We will update this piece when we find out more information.

How To Get Soul Emblems and How They Work With Community Boards in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

You have multiple different currencies to keep track of in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. A currency you want to become familiar with is called Soul Emblems. These are useful because they're going to provide access to immensely helpful passives you can optimize for your character, depending on your playstyle of the game.

How to Get Soul Emblems

Your first goal is to acquire soul emblems. You receive them from completing side quests or performing tasks for specific members of the game, such as Goku, Picollo, Vegeta, Chi-Chi, Master Roshi, Krillin, and many more you encounter throughout your journey in the game. You need soul emblems to use on the community boards, but you also need specific soul emblems to gain access to particular community boards.

Community Boards

First of all, community boards are where you place your soul emblems. The community board has a layout specific to it unique from the others. For example, Goku's board, the Z Warrior Community, has a large Z formation. Goku's soul emblem goes right in the middle, and you place other character's soul emblems in the other slots surrounding it. They connect, and by linking specific characters together you gain bonuses to leveling up the community board.

You can check to see what bonuses you receive by linking characters together, and they are listed out on a character's soul emblem page. You can see how much of a bonus you receive and the name of it, but you don't know who it connects with until you link them together on a community board.

The connections are blocked out by a question mark. To find out, place different soul emblems on a community board to see if they unlock a boost. The stronger the bonus, the more you can level up a community board.  You want to increase the level of the board because it gives you access to additional skills that give your character special passives in the game.

Z Warrior Community Board in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

The community boards provide different bonuses. Z Warrior Community gives bonuses to combat, so if you're more focused on combat, you want to place as many soul emblems as you possibly can here. However, if you're going to increase the stat bonuses you receive from eating food, you want to go to Chi-Chi's board, which is the Cooking Community. You can receive bonuses to your meal success rate, how much of a stat boost you receive from the foot, the duration of the food, and much more.

You don't unlock all of the community boards at once, either. You need to meet one of the leaders for the boards to and gain their soul emblem, thereby making the board available to you. After you do that, you can start adding soul emblems to it over time.

How to Level up a Soul Emblem

To level up a soul emblem you need to increase your friendship and your proficiency with the character. The quickest way to level up both of these parameters is to provide them with gifts. You can do this from the soul emblem page where you view the various bonuses tied to that soul emblem.

The more you increase a soul emblem's level, the more bonuses you're going to receive from the community boards in Kakarot. There are seven community boards to unlock, so make sure you view all of them to see what bonuses you want to receive while playing the game.

Here's what the pros are saying about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Byleth revealRobert WorkmanThu, 01/16/2020 - 10:40

Today, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s fifth DLC combatant was revealed—Byleth from the Fire Emblem series. So far, the reaction from fans and casual players and fans has been mixed, to say the least.

Some fans are disappointed with the fact that another “swordsman” from the Fire Emblem series will join the game. Others were absolutely shocked, and eager to have him (or her, depending on which version you choose) take on the competition. But what do the Super Smash Bros. pros out there think?

Leonardo “MKLeo” Lopez was eager to give the character a try. The Smash Ultimate winner from EVO 2019 noted in his tweet, “For those asking...YEAH, im gonna play Byleth! Gonna give it a try. I have 12 days to finally take FE3H from its box lol and start playing it. The only sad thing is that my secondary Wario will only last until January 28th (sad face).”

Zero Wondering (aka Tempo ZeRo) was also optimistic about the character, and liked the reveal as a whole. “I’m gonna risk making the cap tweet of the day, but I think the direct wasn’t nearly as bad as people are saying,” he said after seeing negative thoughts from those that weren’t fans of Byleth. “Yes, it is another FE character, but it’s done in a more unique manner and more content is always good.” He also praised the forthcoming Fighters Pass, which will consist of six fighters instead of the usual five. “Super generous,” he added. “I liked it.”

GimR didn’t have much to say when it comes to Byleth themselves. But he did like one particular jab that came during the reveal trailer. “The nod at ‘too many swordsmen’ was sick,” he noted.

GSM Void expressed his excitement for the character. “Byleth releasing after Genesis!” he said. “Woooo I’m excited.”

Meanwhile, the Phenomenal EE had a somewhat mixed reaction. He actually predicted before the Smash Bros. Direct special that another Fire Emblem character would be revealed. But then he retweeted the Nintendo Versus announcement of Byleth’s debut, so it looks like he’s in support of it.

While there may be mixed opinions, it sounds like many are interested in seeing what Byleth brings to the picture. We’ll find out when they arrive on Jan. 28.

If you missed the Byleth reveal (or that humorous “swordsmen” nod at the 2:05 mark), check out the debut trailer below.

Borderlands 3's latest hotfix unleashes Farming Frenzy event alongside Maliwan Takedown Mission ScalingZack PalmThu, 01/16/2020 - 11:17

Borderlands 3's farming frenzy event and a modified Takedown at Maliwan Blacksite mission are launching later today alongside a handful of bug fixes and Vault Hunter changesThe farming frenzy will stick around for a limited time until Jan. 30.

You can expect the event to kick off today at 9am PST. The event boosts the number of rare spawns happening throughout the game, and there are additional chances for Anointed and Legendary drops to happen. Players can expect every boss in the game to have boosted drop rates, and this includes those at the Takedown at Maliwan Blacksite.

The Takedown at Maliwan Blacksite mission also changed a little bit. Following the hotfix, the mission scales to how many players are in your party at the time. The more players you take with you into the mission, the harder the enemies and bosses are going to be. You want to bring your best companions with you to handle whatever you face. However, thanks to the farming frenzy event, the loot from these bosses are likely going to prove extremely worthwhile for the challenge. It also means you go in solo if you prefer and still away with some great loot.

We do have a small list of bug fixes along with Vault Hunter chances for the Operative, Gunner, and Beastmaster:

Bug Fixes

  • Addressed a reported concern with itemcard and hotfix sometimes not showing information correctly
  • Addressed a reported concern that Judge Hightower was sometimes not dropping items from his dedicated item pool
  • Adjusted the balance of Fabrikator, Freddie, ST4NL3Y, Constructor, Tony Bordel, Tricksy Nick, and Third Rail to provide a greater challenge

Developer note – We noticed that the bosses in the Handsome Jackpot weren’t providing players with a satisfying challenge. We’ll be monitoring these bosses and make adjustments as needed in the future.

  • The Ion Cannon now has a 5 second reload and consumes at least 6 ammo per shot

The Ion Cannon is a strong weapon and we don’t want to change that, but it’s a little over performing. We’ve increased the reload time and made it consume more ammo but left its damage unchanged to still provide a strong burst of damage.

  • Added collisions to prevent the Gunner from sometimes becoming stuck in Meridian Mercantile
  • Added collisions to prevent players from sometimes escaping the map in various locations
  • Increased the radius of the New-U station at The Arrogant Approach

Vault Hunter Changes

In looking at the bonuses from Anointments, we felt that some were not providing enough of a bonus. We’ve increased the bonuses on the Anointments below.

Moze the Gunner

  • While Auto Bear is active, deals 75 percent (from 20 percent) bonus incendiary damage
  • After exiting Iron Bear, the next 2 magazines will have 125 percent (from 40 percent) bonus incendiary damage
  • After exiting Iron Bear, gain 160 percent (from 120 percent) increased Splash damage for 18 seconds
  • When entering and exiting Iron Bear, nova damage increased

Zane the Operative

  • While Barrier is active, Accuracy is increased by 60 percent, and Critical Hit damage is increased by 70 percent (from 30 percent)
  • While SNTL is active, gain 100 percent (from 50 percent) of damage as bonus Cryo damage

FL4K the Beastmaster

  • When exiting Fade Away, nova damage increased
  • After using Rakk Attack!, gain 50 percent (from 25 percent) critical hit damage for a short time

The changes go live today at 9am PST, and the farming frenzy event continues until Jan. 30.

Hunt: Showdown has new console developers, is coming to the PlayStation 4, and upcoming content dropsZack PalmThu, 01/16/2020 - 11:43

Hunt: Showdown will now have a Koch Media as their console publisher moving forward, giving original publishers Crytek time to focus on the PC version of the game, Crytek shared in a statement on their website.

The two companies have been working together closely since Hunt: Showdown officially released and arrived out of early access in July 2019. Koch Media was responsible for the retail release of the game while Crytek handled the development side. Now, Crytek is handing the reigns to Koch Media to focus on the retail and digital releases of the console versions with Hunt: Showdown making its way to the PlayStation 4 on Feb. 18. It arrived to the Xbox One in September 2019.

However, the two companies will continue to work closely together while they develop the console and PC versions. “With Koch handling the publishing side of things, our development team can put all of their focus on continuing to develop and optimize Hunt across platforms, together with our community,” said Crytek CEO Avni Yerli. “While we focus on development, Koch will apply their immense digital and retail publishing expertise to the title, supporting the game’s continued growth. We can’t wait to see what PlayStation players think of the game, and to continue to bring new content to all our players in the coming year.”

Koch Media is a mass media company with its headquarters in Höfen, Austria. Their game division, Deep Silver, has worked on games like Conan ExilesKingdom Come: Deliverance, Yakuza Kiwami 2Shenmue III, and they're working on the upcoming Wasteland 3 game.

Beyond this, Hunt: Showdown players can expect to see even more content through regular updates. The upcoming 1.2 update will introduce random teams of three entering a hunt together, new Legendary Hunters, an advanced tutorial to assist new players, and new equipment and weapons for all hunters to use. Additionally, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players can look forward to the chance of the consoles gaining crossplay capabilities, a solo PvE mode available for both versions, more live-events, outfit customization, and a new map.

Plenty is happening in Hunt: Showdown in the future. We can expect to hear more from both developers once the dust settles and the transition occurs. You can now play Hunt: Showdown on the Xbox One, PC, and it is coming to the PlayStation 4 on Feb. 18.

Slogan
Dragon Ball is back with another solid adaptation.

Once you’ve played almost any Dragon Ball game with a story mode, you’ve likely been through the story of Dragon Ball Z. But Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a rare instance where the formula works once again because the people behind it, Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2, love the source material and were willing to flesh out many of the smaller details.

While we think the name doesn’t fit what the game actually is, Kakarot is a fun experience that helps build out the world of the show in a way that has never been done before. And though the overworld was ambitious, it works, and it’s only marred by a few basic flaws.

Hello, Hello

dbz-encounter

From the moment you start the game, Kakarot sets out to reignite the feeling you had when you first watched the anime on TV with a mixture of the original opening and moments of gameplay to composer Chiho Kiyooka’s now-classic "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" theme.

After briefly introducing you to Goku and Gohan, the game tosses you into a tutorial that lays out almost everything you need to know about the battle system, though it doesn’t do a great job of teaching the finer details.

The combat is smooth and feels a lot looser than in the Xenoverse games, and that carries over to the overworld controls, which can feel floaty once you first take control of Goku outside of a fight. Neither the battle controls nor the overworld controls feel great at the start, but the more you play, the better they start to feel—outside of the flying up and down commands, which just stink.

You Still Need Training

dbz-piccolo

Things can get overwhelming at first, as the game introduces you to systems like cooking, ingredient gathering, and the Community Board right out of the gate. But just like the combat, it is all simple enough to grasp after a brief overview.

Cooking and eating meals made from the ingredients you find and hunt provides temporary boosts to specific stats depending on the meal, but also permanently increase stats such as health and base Ki power.

The Community Board is an interesting mechanic where, as you progress through the story, you earn Emblems from various characters. Each character has a set value that can be applied to one of seven different boards, with each board providing useful stat boosts and higher chances for extra effects, like cooking more than one of a meal when you select it.

Regarding difficulty, the game is really easy up until you reach the Raditz fight, which shows that the scaling has a good curve. The game really tests you during that fight, making you feel like you have learned a lot in your short stint exploring and training in the world.

A Living World (That Hasn’t Been Wished Back to Life)

dbz-fish

You won’t be free to roam the various overworld maps until after a few missions, but once the world opens up, it’s pleasantly surprising just how detailed and lived-in it is. One of the weakest parts of the Dragon Ball franchise is the world itself, since it’s mostly just used as jumping-off points for fights. But in Karakot, the developers went to great lengths to construct a varied landscape with plenty to explore.

In that giant overworld, the game runs well, for the most part, outside of a few NPC models looking a bit choppy when they are far off in the distance or first loading in. There’s rarely any slow-down while flying across the map at full speed, which is impressive.

For those who, like us, love the original Dragon Ball series, there are plenty of returning characters from Goku’s younger days too. You will end up in side quests for people like Launch and Nam, while also running into people like the World Tournament Announcer and Pilaf’s gang, which just adds to how alive each part of the world feels.

You Might Want to Pack a Senzu Bean

dbz-dino

However, it’s not all perfect. Generic Red Ribbon Army robots are slapped into every area, and they get very old after about the 15th time they give chase as you try to explore. They aren’t challenging, they have no narrative reason for being there, and they only serve as an enemy in the overworld that isn’t just wildlife. It also doesn’t help that they repeat the same two voice lines every time you fly close enough.

Likewise, fighting dinosaurs is extremely underwhelming and simply consists of flying above them and blasting them with small Ki Blasts until they fall over.

There is nothing special about most of the tracks that play during the first 10 hours of the game, either. There are new arrangements of the original anime soundtrack at key moments, but outside of that, most tracks are completely forgettable.

But the biggest disappointment by far is that you don’t actually get to follow the entirety of Goku’s journey. All of the story that takes place in Other World is told through cutscenes and text boxes, which means no running Snake Way or interacting with King Kai’s planet at all. This feels like a huge missed opportunity and could have added an extra dimension that most DBZ games don’t touch on.

Final Thoughts

dbz-faceoff

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot looks incredible and runs very well, with very few instances of lag or glitches. The developers did a stand-up job making the world of Dragon Ball appear lively and vibrant, which made us want to spend extra time exploring every area and inhabiting the locations that get screen time in the show.

And while the generic enemies you fight in the overworld get repetitive, and the hunting mechanics are very surface level, the game does a good job of working around that by adding interesting side quests with many returning faces.

Overall, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a fun experience with fluid combat that improves on almost every aspect of the franchises’ recent games, with a system that makes you feel as if you are learning and growing as the game progresses—and not just in an artificial, numbers-based way.
